Text and local data
Pasted text is processed in memory for your reading session. PDF imports use Apple PDFKit to extract the existing text layer locally. This import does not upload document contents to a text recognition service.
- The library stores cleaned text, title, word count, import time and reading position on your device.
- Statistics include speed, word counts, session totals and timestamps. History keeps 50 sessions; cumulative totals are separate.
- Settings, records, optional profile name and photo stay local. iOS requests photo library access for photo selection.
- SpeedRead has no account or app-provided cloud synchronization.
Technical updates
SpeedRead can check for and download updates through Expo Updates at startup. The service receives technical information: IP address, platform, runtime version, a stored random client identifier and, where applicable, information about a previous fatal app error or failed update launch. Reading content is not attached to this request as documents.
The client identifier is a pseudonymous installation identifier. It is generated on the device, persists across app launches and updates, and is not derived from hardware or user account data. It allows update requests from the same app installation to be recognized.
Expo also aggregates update requests into usage statistics over time and by platform. This analysis already uses the update checks themselves; it does not include reading texts, profile details or individual reading results transmitted by SpeedRead. We use the technical information to deliver updates reliably, diagnose failures and understand update usage. We do not use it for personalized advertising or tracking across other providers’ apps and websites.
The recipient is Expo (650 Industries, Inc.). Expo describes processing in the United States. Its linked privacy policy explains international processing, safeguards and retention.
Sharing and support
The share action lets you send a result image to an app or person you choose. It includes reading results and your profile name, if entered. Further processing depends on your chosen recipient.
If you contact us, we process your sender address, message and voluntary attachments to handle your request. Messages reach our iCloud mailbox, involving the email service. Please avoid sending confidential documents.
Purposes and legal bases
Requested app functions and related support rely on Article 6(1)(b) GDPR. General enquiries and secure technical operation rely on Article 6(1)(f); our interests are responding to requests and reliably providing the app.
Where consent is required, Article 6(1)(a) applies; legally required processing relies on Article 6(1)(c). Profile details and contacting us are optional. We cannot handle an individual support request without receiving a message.
Retention and deletion
Library data and settings remain on your device until deleted. Long-press a book and confirm deletion to remove its library text and entry. This does not remove previously recorded cumulative statistics.
Deleting the app removes its local app data; offloading it is different. Device backups, separately stored originals and shared images may remain. Manage these copies through their storage location or provider.
Support correspondence is retained according to the handling of your request and any applicable legal retention duties. Expo publishes its own retention information for technical data.
Your rights
Subject to the legal requirements, you may request access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing and data portability. You may object to processing based on legitimate interests on grounds relating to your particular situation.
You may withdraw consent for future processing without affecting earlier lawful processing. You may complain to a data protection authority. Contact [email protected] about privacy. We cannot remotely access content stored only on your device.
